School Profile

Ala Wai Elementary School is a picturesque K-5 public school of 384 students located in urban Honolulu against the scenic Waikiki skyline. We believe that students learn best in a safe, fun and engaging school environment. At Ala Wai School, we are proud of our cultural diversity and the array of supports and experiences we provide for our students.
Our school provides a range of programs which focus on nurturing and developing each student to become lifelong learners. These programs include Hawaiiana, drama, computer skills, music, and physical education. Students have before and after school learning opportunities that include yoga, tennis, run club, library club, and JPO.
We recognize excellence in our students through monthly, quarterly, and annual awards for academics, leadership, and community service. Students receive academic recognition in reading, math, science, and speech. Students receive leadership recognition through the Leader in Me program and the implementation of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Students are also recognized for perfect attendance, JPO, athletic achievement, and community service.
Many community partners, volunteers, and engaged parents work together to support the school’s mission to prepare students to achieve high standards in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. Community volunteers engage in mentoring and tutoring students, campus beautification projects, vision and hearing screening, and supporting teachers in the classroom. In addition, our PTSA provides support to our teachers to enhance student learning experiences.
During the 2016-2017 school year, we continued with our implementation of the 21st Century Teaching and Learning Process to engage student creativity and curiosity through project-based inquiry. Our teachers provided their students with opportunities to incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) practices while learning about and solving real-world problems. Our students worked diligently in cooperative learning groups and proudly displayed their work at our annual Learning Showcase. We will continue to offer our students engaging and relevant lessons to create memorable experiences and increase their desire to learn and teach others.
The faculty and staff are committed and dedicated to providing the best education for our students. With the support of our school community, we can ensure that ALL of our students meet our vision of “Believe. Achieve. Succeed. Dream Big and Make It Happen!”
